Promoting Inclusion and Dignity: Transgender Signboards Installed at 14 Public Toilets in Bhilwara

On 25 May, Bal Va Mahila Chetna Samiti (BMCS), in collaboration with the Association for India’s Development (AID), organized a workshop at Gramin Haat, Bhilwara, focusing on the rights, challenges, and social inclusion of the transgender community. The workshop provided a platform for community members to share their experiences and highlight the barriers they face in their daily lives.

One of the key issues raised during the discussion was the difficulty transgender persons encounter while accessing public toilets. Community members shared that the lack of recognition of their gender identity in public facilities often leads to discomfort, confusion, and discrimination.

The workshop was facilitated by Pushpa Mai, a member of the Rajasthan Kinnar Board and a prominent social activist from Jaipur, who participated as the resource person. She led discussions on the rights, dignity, and inclusion of transgender persons and emphasized the need for responsive action from government institutions.

Following the workshop, Pushpa Mai and representatives of BMCS met with the Additional District Collector and officials of the Municipal Corporation to advocate for gender-inclusive public facilities. They specifically requested the installation of dedicated signboards recognizing Trans Men and Trans Women at public toilets.

Responding positively to this demand, the Municipal Corporation of Bhilwara took prompt action and installed transgender-inclusive signboards at 14 public toilets across the city. This initiative marks an important step toward creating safer, more accessible, and respectful public spaces for transgender individuals.

Beyond improving access to public facilities, the initiative symbolizes the recognition and affirmation of transgender identities in public life. It demonstrates how constructive dialogue between communities, civil society organizations, and local government can lead to meaningful and tangible change.

BMCS expresses its sincere appreciation to the Municipal Corporation and district administration for their responsiveness and commitment to inclusion. This achievement highlights how small but significant actions can contribute to building a more equitable society where every individual is treated with dignity and respect.
